4. Special characteristics of pain during childhood
Contrary to what was believed in the past, pain can be felt from birth and the babies have the capacity to feel pain even being premature. The evaluation of pain in new-borns and children below 4 years old is more complex. When the children cannot put on words the pain they are feeling, the families are the ones who know best how to identify this pain.
Regarding the pharmacological interventions, in paediatrics it is important to pay most attention to the dosing and control of the adverse effects. Although the paediatrics population is usually benefitted from the same medicines as the adult population, there are some drugs like codeine which are not recommended for administration on a paediatric age. Regarding the non-pharmacological interventions, it is essential to include the parents and other close relatives in the interventions for the chronic pain management. Next, we will talk about some specificities of the new-born-infant and the older children.
