Congestive heart failure (CHF) is a rare complication that can develop in the most severe forms of EB. It is due to the development of dilated cardiomyopathy, which is a progressive affectation of the heart muscle that leads to dilation of the heart with difficulty in pumping blood. People with BE should be followed up looking for possible signs and symptoms of CHF (tiredness, palpitations, inability to exert themselves, accumulation of fluids in the legs), performing echocardiograms and monitoring the levels of carnitineselenium and haemoglobin in the blood. The deficiency of these elements has been associated with the appearance of dilated cardiomyopathy.
