2.5. Domestic life and leisure
Playing and enjoying themselves are essential for all children. It’s important to allow them to play freely, as this helps them develop an awareness of their abilities and limitations. Coordination, which is enhanced through play, greatly impacts their safety and improves their ability to manage surrounding risks.
It’s advisable for children to engage in activities outside of school hours, in addition to playing. Having hobbies can significantly enhance their cognitive, psychological, and social development. Encouraging creativity through artistic activities tailored to their abilities can improve their social and emotional skills while providing enjoyment and pleasure. Similarly, sports can promote physical, psychological, and social development, often teaching valuable life lessons. It’s important to protect sensitive areas when playing sports and to choose low-impact or non-contact activities. For those who cannot or do not wish to participate in sports, it’s essential to encourage mobility and daily physical activity.
On the other hand, relationships with pets and connections with nature can have a very positive impact on childhood development, helping to enhance self-esteem and instill values such as respect, friendship, responsibility, and the ability to care for another being. It’s important to tailor pet choices to each individual situation, considering the specific context. Factors to keep in mind when choosing a pet include potential allergies, available time for care, financial capacity, and the family's preferences.
Another activity that initially causes concern for families is keeping up with routines or traveling during holiday periods. When planning, it’s important to consider the child's needs: the time required for care and necessary materials, having a safe space for activities, ensuring access to medications and specialized food if needed, and choosing an appropriate destination (avoiding extreme heat, cold, or humidity, and considering the season of travel). If traveling by plane, it’s essential to obtain a medical report authorizing the transport of sharp objects for care (such as scissors or needles) and any other potentially restricted items. Additionally, it’s advisable to assess possible architectural barriers at the chosen destination.
