At present, no single genetic changes have been identified that condition the onset of JDM, although it is believed that the combination of certain genetic changes would favor its development.

The association between different genetic changes and a certain course of disease has been found: thus, the presence of the HLA-DRB1_1501 polymorphism is more frequently associated with the monocyclic form of JDM.
