4.1. What is a gene?

Genes are units of information formed by sequences or fragments of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) that are stored in chromosomes.

Chromosomes are stored in the nucleus of our cells.

Genetic information determines how we are and how our different systems function. It determines for example our eye color or our height. Although this information is very homogeneous (only 0.1% is different from one individual to another), there is a small percentage that is unique to each person and that makes us different. These variations sometimes result in a predisposition to certain diseases.
