Myotonic dystrophy

Neuromuscular

Childhood/juvenile myotonic dystrophy

This form describes children who do not have problems at birth. They present with signs of myotonic dystrophy in early childhood. Childhood or juvenile forms develop symptoms like those of adults. Speech and learning difficulties are also common and usually noticeable once the child reaches school age.

Daytime sleepiness, fatigue and cognitive disturbances become the biggest burden for these patients. These symptoms can have a significant impact on performance in daily life.

Changes in hormone production can result in disturbed menstrual cycles for girls and women. They can also result in delayed puberty and low libidos for boys and men.
